Costa's Barbers, Battersea High Street Market

Battersea High Street on a Saturday has rapidly gone from one man and his fruit and veg stall to a flourishing foodie market. As I write I am sitting amidst the bustle at a beautifully sunny table outside Costa's Barbers Cafe ... known to most regulars as Valeria's, after its Italian owner ... who serves our delicious arabica coffees from an unnamed roaster in Southern Italy in "I love battersea" mugs. The interior is full of vintage mid century furniture and I am told "everything you sit on or at is for sale"

The bustling market now has stalls selling fresh bread, cakes, olive oils, cheeses paella and the latest delights to arrive on the street are two vans: the Green Goat Van from which two handsome young chefs are frantically supplying passers by with organic lamb burgers and wraps, today there is also sustainable gurnard from Port Isaac in Cornwall and next to it "The Firebread" sells the freshest of sourdough pizzas with fresh organic toppings.

There is a real sense that this is just the beginnings ... watch this space.
